With the Panama canal expansion meeting its deadline in late 2015, shippers are busy determining which gateways would best serve their future needs. But even more strategic complexity has been introduced this year with consolidation of ocean carrier services. Rather than whistling in the dark, the leading ocean cargo gateways are keeping their guard up. CVS Caremark Corp. could face as much as $29 million in fines for allegedly losing track of hydrocodone pills at four California stores. They may have been sold on the black market. Officials at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the California Board of Pharmacy told me Monday that more than 37,000 pills were apparently taken from CVS stores in Modesto, Fairfield, Dixon and Turlock. Spike in pharmaceutical thefts in 2013

There was a 50 per cent increase in pharmaceutical thefts in the US last year, although the total number of incidents across all sectors stayed roughly the same. The figures, from cargo security specialist Freightwatch International, suggest that the threat of cargo theft “continues to grow in the US due to increased organization and innovation on the part of cargo thieves,” with 951 incidents equaling the record set in 2012*.
